Promoting Code of Ethics in Teaching via Online and Face-to-Face Learning Modality
The transition from face-to-face to online learning has changed the educational landscape. Yet, I believe that the Code of Ethics in teaching must remain unwavering and will continue to serve as a guide to effective teaching regardless of the delivery mode. The spirit of professionalism, integrity, respect, and dedication to student learning must continue in the physical and virtual classroom.
As a future educator, my fundamental position is to observe and practice this set of ethical and moral principles, standards, and values with the same conscientiousness and honesty whether I stand in front of my students or connect with them through a screen.
One important thing to remember is that teachers should always be at their best by practicing and maintaining professionalism. For example, a teacher conducting an online class should always be prepared to teach, dress appropriately, use an appropriate virtual background, employ respectful language in their interactions, and be a responsible digital citizen, mindful of what they post or share on online platforms used with their students. In support of this, Article IV, Section 2 outlines that every teacher shall strive to uphold the highest possible standards of quality education, shall make the best preparation for the career of teaching, and shall be at his best at all times in the practice of his profession.
Furthermore, teachers should foster a positive and safe learning environment. Article III, section 1 states that a “teacher is a facilitator of learning and development for the youth; he shall, therefore, render the best service by providing an environment conducive to learning and growth,” equally applicable in the online setting. For instance, teachers should monitor and moderate online discussions to prevent cyberbullying, forming clear guidelines for online behavior. As role models of responsible digital citizenship, teachers must promote positive, respectful, and empathetic behavior online. This includes mentoring students in safe, legal, and ethical practices with digital tools, modeling and promoting the responsible management of personal data, and protecting their students’ identity and academic records in compliance with the Data Privacy Act.
Professionalism, fostering a positive
and safe learning environment, and safeguarding student privacy remain
essential in both face-to-face and online settings. As a future educator, I am
committed to consistently upholding these ethical standards and adapting my
teaching for all learning situations.
